News Topical, Digital Desk : The Trump administration has hinted at a major change in the H-1B visa and green card program for millions of foreign workers and students living in the US. This change will particularly affect Indian workers and students. 70% of H-1B visas are Indian students.
US Treasury Secretary Howard Lutnick has called the H-1B visa a fraud and said that now American jobs will be given priority to American citizens.
Speaking to Fox News, Lutnick said, “The H-1B program needs to be changed. The average American earns $75,000 annually, while a green card holder earns $66,000. Why are we choosing lower-level people? Now the Trump administration will bring in a 'Gold Card', which will allow the most qualified people to come into the country.”
H-1B lottery ends, now salary based visa?
The Trump administration is planning to end the current lottery system for H-1B visas. Instead, visas will be given to those who work in high-paying jobs.
This means that foreign workers in low-paying jobs, such as new graduates or those working in small businesses, could be in trouble. This change was previously proposed in 2021, but the Biden administration did not implement it.
Apart from this, there will be changes in the Green Card process as well. Trump's 'Gold Card' program can be a new option, which will give priority to meritorious and high-paid employees. Vice President JD Vance has said that the Green Card does not give anyone the right to stay in America forever, due to which the future of Green Card holders is being questioned.
Will it affect Indian employees?
Indian workers and students who depend on H-1B visas will be the most affected by this change. According to statistics, more than 70% of H-1B visas are given to Indians every year.
Under the new rules, providing personal information such as biometric information and home address will be mandatory for visas. Also, the process will become more complicated with stricter scrutiny and increased documentation demands.
Since Trump came to power in January this year, rules for foreign workers and students have become stricter. The office of Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), which used to help immigrants, has been closed. This has made it difficult to get technical help in the visa process.
