News Topical, Digital Desk : Amidst the turmoil in India's stock market, significant news has emerged from the world of crude oil. The United States, a supplier of Venezuelan oil, has boarded and taken control of a seventh oil tanker belonging to Venezuela.
The US military seized the sanctioned tanker Sagitta in the Caribbean Sea for illegally transporting Venezuelan crude oil. This is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to control oil in the South American country.
This is the seventh seizure of tankers linked to Venezuela since late last year, beginning with the capture of the skipper on December 10. Following the capture of then-Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro earlier this year, the US aims to control the flow of Venezuelan crude oil.
US military gave information
The US Southern Command said in a social media post that the US military seized the motor vessel Sagitta "without incident" and that the tanker was "violating the quarantine imposed by President Trump to ban ships in the Caribbean."
The Sagitta, which sails under the Liberian flag, is registered to a Hong Kong-based company. The tanker last shared its location two months ago while leaving the Baltic Sea. It was already subject to sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department under an executive order related to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The command said the ship had taken oil from Venezuela and said its capture, "demonstrates our determination to ensure that oil leaving Venezuela will be that which is properly and legally coordinated."
US earns $500 million by selling Venezuelan oil
A week ago, White House officials told media outlets that the Trump administration had made its first sale of Venezuelan crude oil , worth $500 million. The sale marks a major step in the administration's plan to market Venezuela's energy resources globally, starting with oil currently stored in tankers and tank terminals.
