News Topical, Digital Desk : Trump Tariff On India: The trade tension between India and America has now reached a new turn. America is going to impose tariffs up to 50% on Indian goods from 9.30 am on Wednesday, 27 August.
This decision has been taken by the administration of US President Donald Trump. The Trump government says that India continues to buy crude oil from Russia, so strict trade action is being taken against it.
On which goods will there be no higher tariff?
- If Indian goods have been sent to the US before 12.01 am on August 27, then no new duty will be levied on them.
- These goods will also be spared from additional tariffs if they are used or cleared in the US before midnight on September 17, 2025.
- For this, the importer will have to provide information to the US Customs through a special code HTSUS 9903.01.85.
According to the report of Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), which sectors will be affected by the new tariff:-
- Sectors like textile, jewellery, shrimp and handicrafts will be badly affected.
- It is estimated that exports from these industries could fall by up to 70%, putting thousands of jobs at risk.
- Pharma and electronics sectors will not suffer much losses at present.
Why is America being strict?
Trump says that Russia's policies are still a threat to US security and foreign policy. India's continued purchase of oil from Russia is troubling the US. Therefore, the US has imposed higher tariffs on India using laws like the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
