News Topical, Digital Desk : South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on Thursday that if the US does not reform its visa system for Korean workers, South Korean companies will likely hesitate to stay in the US or invest directly. At a press conference held to mark the completion of 100 days of his term, Lee even demanded reform of the US visa system.

South Korean workers were arrested

The South Korean president spoke about the September 4 immigration raid in Georgia that resulted in the arrest of more than 300 South Korean workers at a battery factory under construction at Hyundai's giant auto plant in the US city. Lee said the Korean workers would be repatriated on a charter flight on Friday after talks with the US.

The people of South Korea are angry

The massive raids in Georgia and the release of videos showing some workers being led away in chains by US authorities have sparked widespread anger in South Korea. The raids come less than two weeks after a summit between President Donald Trump and Lee following a deal in July that spared South Korea the Trump administration's highest tariffs, but only after South Korea promised US$350 billion in new investment.

What did South Korean lawmakers say?

Lawmakers from both Lee's liberal Democratic Party and the opposition party have described the detentions as abusive and harsh, while South Korea's largest newspaper compared the raids to U.S. immigration authorities meeting the White House's stated goal of 3,000 arrests per day.
