News Topical, Digital Desk : The Central Election Commission has intensified the preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bengal. The work for the revision of the voter list has begun.

There is competition in these districts

In this connection, there is a competition among the people for getting birth certificate before SIR in the Muslim dominated districts of Murshidabad, Malda, North and South Dinajpur bordering Bengal.

People were seen standing in queues since early morning at municipalities, gram panchayats and courts to get their birth certificates corrected, digitised or issued, paying double the normal price of Rs 10 per stamp paper.

People want to get birth certificate as soon as possible

People said that they fear that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) campaign may be launched in the state after a special intensive revision. That is why they want to get the birth certificate as soon as possible.

Berhampur Municipality in Murshidabad district has separate temporary kiosks for form collection, correction, delayed new birth certificates and digitisation. Berhampur Municipality Chairman Narugopal Mukherjee says that 10-12 applications were received daily for digitisation or correction of birth certificates. Now this number has increased to 500-600.

Middlemen are earning profits

Middlemen are charging people Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for digitisation and minor corrections, and Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 for any major change.

Round of accusations and counter-accusations begins

TMC MLA from Lalgola in Murshidabad, Mohammad Ali, says that no political party is against SIR. Former Lok Sabha MP from Berhampur and senior Congress leader Adhir Chaudhary says that the state government can stop the terror through awareness campaigns, but it is deliberately not doing so. TMC is benefiting from this.

TMC is responsible for the atmosphere of chaos- BJP

In the 2021 elections too, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee took electoral advantage by creating fear of NRC. CPI(M) Central Committee member Sujan Chakraborty said that the kind of documents being demanded for SIR in Bihar is the reason why people here are terrified. BJP state president and Rajya Sabha member Shamik Bhattacharya blamed TMC for the atmosphere of chaos.
