News Topical, Digital Desk : In Veja village, in Gujarat's Rajkot district, the mosquito menace has become so severe that no guest dares to stay overnight. According to locals, even relatives who visit during the day are frightened away by the swarm of mosquitoes as soon as dusk falls.
This problem has severely affected the village's social life. People from surrounding villages now refuse to marry their daughters in Veja. Mosquitoes have become a major obstacle to young people's marriages. Many families have boys of marriageable age, but fear of mosquitoes is preventing relationships from lasting.
Large mosquito nets are being installed for animals as well, milk production has decreased.
The plight of animals is no less dire than that of humans. Livestock owners are now forced to hang large mosquito nets in their enclosures. Animals are constantly falling ill due to mosquito bites, resulting in a rapid decline in milk production.
Some farmers, fed up with mosquitoes, have resorted to selling their livestock. Villagers say that a significant portion of the income generated by mosquitoes is spent on medicines and mosquito nets. Every five to six months, the nets tear, creating a new financial burden.
Villagers have been struggling for 7-8 years, the administration only sprinkles powder
This problem has been growing steadily in Veja village for the past 7-8 years. According to villagers, the accumulation of dirty water and water hyacinth (gandi vel) around the village has led to an uncontrolled mosquito population.
People have complained to the administration repeatedly, but instead of finding a permanent solution, officials simply sprinkle mosquito repellent powder as a formality. The problem is so severe that when one department goes to work, others simply say, "This area is not under our jurisdiction."
'How will we survive if the administration gives up?' – villagers ask
The people of Veja village are now questioning that if the administration itself is unable to deal with this problem, then how will they live their lives amidst thousands of mosquitoes?
The villagers demand that the administration immediately drain out the dirty water, clear the water hyacinth and take permanent measures to destroy the mosquito breeding grounds, so that the social and economic life of the village can get back on track.
