News Topical, Digital Desk : The US Navy has received another major boost. During a grand ceremony held in Boston Harbor, the USS Massachusetts (SSN 798) was officially commissioned into the Navy fleet.

This is the 25th Virginia-class submarine, designed to meet the demands of modern warfare. Significantly, it is the first submarine to be named in honor of the state of Massachusetts.

What is the USS Massachusetts?

The USS Massachusetts is a "fast attack" nuclear submarine, known for its speed and stealth. It can remain underwater for months without being detected by the enemy. It is designed to operate in shallow coastal areas and deep waters, providing a powerful strike capability.

Equipped with unmatched firepower

This submarine is technologically advanced. Its overall length is 377 feet, but with the Virginia Payload Module (VPM), its length increases to 461 feet. It can dive to depths of over 800 feet and reach speeds of over 25 knots (approximately 46 kilometers per hour). It is equipped with a nuclear reactor, which provides it with unlimited energy, eliminating the need to surface frequently for refueling.

When it comes to weaponry, the USS Massachusetts is nothing short of a mobile fortress. It's equipped with 24 Tomahawk cruise missiles, capable of destroying enemy targets with pinpoint accuracy. Additionally, it's equipped with Mk 48 advanced torpedoes and four torpedo tubes, making it a formidable predator in naval warfare.

The Virginia class is significantly superior to previous classes of ships in the Navy's fleet, such as the Los Angeles class and Seawolf class. The submarine has a capacity for 145 crew members, including 17 officers and 128 enlisted personnel.
