News Topical, Digital Desk : Heavy rains are falling in many parts of the country, and there is a possibility of floods in many places. In such a situation, there is a danger of mosquito menace increasing due to waterlogging and cases of diseases like dengue, malaria (Dengue Cases in India) and chikungunya start increasing.

Therefore, it is very important to prevent dengue and malaria during monsoon. Let us know what are the symptoms of dengue and malaria and what things we should keep in mind to avoid them.

Dengue - Symptoms and Diagnosis

Dengue is a viral disease that is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Its symptoms usually appear 3-7 days after the mosquito bite.

Main characteristics-

  • High fever – Sudden high fever up to 104-105 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Headache - sharp pain behind the eyes, which increases on moving the eyes.
  • Muscle and joint pain - This is also called "break bone fever" because the body aches so much that it feels like the bones are breaking.
  • Skin rashes: Red rashes appear on the body 2-5 days after the fever.
  • Vomiting or nausea.

In a severe condition (dengue hemorrhagic fever), these symptoms can also be seen-

  • Bleeding from the gums or nose.
  • Blood in vomit or stool.
  • Bruising under the skin.

Malaria - Symptoms and Diagnosis

Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite, which enters the body through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito.

Main characteristics-

  • Feeling cold followed by high fever- This is the first symptom of malaria. In this, first one feels cold with shivering and then high fever rises.
  • Sweating and fever coming down- After high fever, one starts sweating and the fever comes down.
  • Headache and vomiting.
  • Feeling weakness and fatigue in the body  .
  • Fever often occurs in cycles of 48 or 72 hours.

Ways to prevent dengue and malaria

Both these diseases are spread by mosquito bites, so the most effective way to prevent them is  to avoid mosquitoes  and stop their breeding.

Prevent breeding of mosquitoes-

  • Do not allow water to accumulate in pots, full tyres, empty utensils, coolers etc. around the house.
  • Empty and dry coolers, water tanks and drinking water vessels for animals and birds from time to time and then refill.
  • Clean the drains on the roof of the house so that water does not stagnate in them.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites-

  • Wear full-sleeved clothes. It is better to wear light-coloured clothes, as dark colours attract mosquitoes.
  • Use mosquito nets, especially for children and the elderly.
  • During the day, especially in the morning and evening, mosquitoes are most active. So be extra careful at this time.
  • Use mosquito repellent cream as per doctor's advice.

Other measures-

  • Install fine mesh on the windows and doors of the house.
  • Get insecticides sprayed.
  • If you or any member of your family shows symptoms of dengue or malaria, contact a doctor immediately. Avoid taking any medicine on your own.
