News Topical, Digital Desk : Gaza's Rafah border crossing reopened for limited traffic on Monday, marking a significant step towards an Israel-Hamas ceasefire.

However, on the ground, this is a largely symbolic development, as very few people will be allowed to travel in either direction and no goods will be sent to the war-torn region.

Possessed in 2024

Israel captured the Rafah crossing in May 2024. No one was seen crossing into or out of Gaza in the first hour after it opened. An Egyptian official said 50 Palestinians would cross the border in each direction on the checkpoint's first day of operation.

According to Gaza health officials, approximately 20,000 Palestinian children and adults in need of medical care are hoping to leave Gaza through this checkpoint. Thousands of other Palestinians outside the territory are hoping to enter and return home.

Egyptian state media and an Israeli security official also confirmed the reopening. The British Foreign Minister welcomed the move. Meanwhile, approximately 150 Egyptian hospitals are ready to accept Palestinian patients evacuated from Gaza via the Rafah crossing.

Palestinian child killed by Israeli fire

A three-year-old boy was killed in an Israeli naval attack on tents sheltering displaced people on the coast of Khan Younis in Gaza on Monday, Palestinian hospital officials said.
