News Topical, Digital Desk : The government is undertaking a major reorganization to simplify, expedite, and make the administrative system in Delhi more public-friendly. This change will expand the number of revenue districts in Delhi from the current 11 to 13.
Additionally, the number of subdivisions (SDM offices) will be increased from 33 to 39. The government believes that the new structure will provide faster service to the public and significantly reduce the number of visits to government offices.
Cabinet gives in-principle approval
According to government sources, the Delhi Cabinet has given in-principle approval to this proposal. It will now be sent to the Lieutenant Governor. Once the LG's approval is received, the new district-wise system will be implemented in Delhi. The government plans to establish a mini-secretariat in each district, where all departmental work except law and order will be handled within a single complex. This will save the public from having to navigate multiple offices.
How will the map of Delhi change?
New district boundaries have been proposed, based on the 11 municipal zones. As part of the changes, Sadar Zone will be renamed Old Delhi District. In the trans-Yamuna region, East and North-East districts will be abolished and two new districts, Shahdara North and Shahdara South, will be created. The existing North District will be divided into two parts: Civil Lines and Old Delhi. A large part of South-West District will be included in the new Najafgarh District.
Proposed list of new districts
- Old Delhi - Sadar Bazaar, Chandni Chowk
- Central Delhi - Defence Colony, Kalkaji
- New Delhi - New Delhi, Delhi Cantt

What will the public benefit from?
A large portion of Delhi's population visits various offices daily for government work. Often, traveling from one department to another wastes both time and money. The government believes that increasing the number of districts and subdivisions will make services available closer to the public's homes. This will also speed up file processing, reduce congestion in offices, and enhance transparency in administrative processes. Experts say that this reorganization is the need of the hour given Delhi's rapidly growing population. The new districting will make the city's administration more modern, efficient, and streamlined.
