News Topical, Digital Desk : A shocking incident has occurred at a hospital in the capital, Delhi. An Iraqi child's life was saved through successful surgery. The child's heart was beating 170 to 200 times a minute. Doctors at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute saved the boy's life last month by performing a rare heart surgery called an electrophysiology study and radiofrequency ablation.

What is this disease

According to a hospital statement, the patient had incessant tachycardia—a rapid heartbeat. The condition, which doesn't resolve on its own, can weaken the heart muscle and lead to heart failure, the statement said. The child suffered from an abnormal electrical circuit problem since birth. According to the hospital, his heartbeat was very rapid when he was brought to Fortis Escorts, Okhla.

How was it different from normal?

The hospital said the baby's heart was beating 170 to 200 times a minute. A normal heart beats 75 to 118 times a minute, according to the hospital. The baby weighed only 26 kilograms and had been ill for several years. According to the hospital, he was unable to receive treatment in Iraq because his young age and low weight posed a greater risk.

Child recovering after surgery

Dr. Aparna Jaswal, Director of the Department of Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology at FEHI, said, "This was a very complex and rare case. Usually, such procedures are delayed until the child weighs more than 30 kg. However, in this case, his condition was deteriorating, and if treatment had been delayed further, the heart could have stopped working." Dr. Jaswal further said, "This problem affects one in 1,000 children worldwide. The child is doing well after the surgery. He has resumed normal activities."
