Police flogged a couple 140 times each for having sex and drinking alcohol without being married. This punishment is one of the harshest in the last 25 years since Islamic law was implemented.
Sharia law in Aceh Province
Aceh is the only Indonesian province where Sharia law is enforced, making it completely illegal for unmarried couples to have sexual relations. The woman was left crying and unconscious after being brutally beaten in the Aceh region, which is governed by strict Islamic laws.

According to news agency FP, the lovers were publicly flogged on their backs with thin bamboo sticks. Sharia police lashed the couple 140 times each with thin bamboo sticks. Dozens of people were present when the couple was punished. The couples received 100 lashes each for having sex outside marriage and 40 lashes each for drinking alcohol.
Punishment for breaking Sharia law
It is worth noting that Aceh was granted special autonomy within Indonesia in 2001, and Sharia law was subsequently implemented there. The couple was among six people flogged for violating Islamic codes. Last year, two men were also flogged 76 times each for violating Sharia law.
