Case registered against the accused under several sections
According to the JMI official, the incident took place on Sunday night when a female student reported molestation near Gate No. 8 of the campus. The university's proctoral and security teams, along with the security advisor and chief proctor, immediately alerted the Jamia Nagar police station. The police personnel immediately reached the university gate and apprehended the accused. An FIR has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and the accused is currently in police custody. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
What did the JMI administration say in its statement?
The JMI statement said, "The culprit was caught immediately and the university authorities made several rounds of the campus, patrolling every nook and corner, to ensure that the campus remains peaceful and safe. Senior officials, including the Vice Chancellor, are making regular visits to reassure students, especially women, of their safety."
AISA criticized the attitude of the university
The Jamia administration reiterated its zero tolerance policy towards any form of violence against women and emphasised its commitment to maintaining law and order on campus. Meanwhile, the All India Students' Association (AISA) criticised the university's attitude towards campus security. AISA alleged that the incident took place under the watch of security staff. The statement said that this horrific incident comes after another major security lapse in the Hall of Girls Residence last month.
It accused the university of creating an environment of impunity through apathy and inaction and said the existing security arrangements were more focused on surveilling students than ensuring their safety. AISA demanded a transparent investigation, strict action against the culprit and accountability for the security personnel who allegedly failed in their duty.
