According to the legend, a Brahmin family lived in a village. The Brahmin's wife observed the Kajari Teej fast on the Tritiya Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. During the fast, she asked her husband to bring Sattu. The Brahmin did not have money for Sattu. So he decided to steal. After this, he entered the shop at night to buy Sattu. During that time, the shop owner woke up and caught the Brahmin and his wife was waiting for Sattu. At the same time, the moon had come out.

When the shop owner searched him, he found some sattu with him. The Brahmin told him everything. Hearing his words, the owner felt pity for him and said that from today onwards he will treat his wife as his sister. Finally, the owner bid farewell to the Brahmin by giving him mehandi, sattu, jewelry and money. After this, everyone worshipped Kajli Mata ritually.
