News Topical, Digital Desk : The festival of Sharadiya Navratri is celebrated with devotion and joy every year in India. In 2025, this sacred festival begins on September 22nd. Navratri, the grand festival of worshipping Shakti, infuses new energy and devotion into the lives of devotees every year.
During these nine divine days, nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. Devotees observe fasts, engage in hymns and hymns, and a divine atmosphere of worship resonates in every home.
But Navratri is not only a festival of devotion, but also of discipline and tradition. Ghatasthapana (Kalash installation) is considered the most important ritual of Navratri. Let's learn the complete method of Ghatasthapana and the rules to follow during this time:
Auspicious time and purification of the place
On the first day of Navratri, perform Ghatasthapana during the auspicious time in the morning. First, clean the place of worship. Spread a red or yellow cloth there, add soil or sand, and sow barley or wheat. These seeds symbolize prosperity and progress.
After installing the Kalash in the house, the house should not be left empty for nine days. The Kalash houses the power of Goddess Durga. Leaving it unattended is considered inauspicious. Maintaining a constant atmosphere of devotion in the home is the key to the success of the puja.
Preparation of the vase
- Take an earthen or copper pot.
- Fill it with Ganga water or pure water.
- Put Akshat, betel nut, coin, Durva and flowers in the water.
- Make a Swastika on the outside of the Kalash and tie it with a sacred thread.
- Place five or seven mango leaves on the mouth of the Kalash. Place a coconut wrapped in a red cloth on top. This coconut symbolizes Goddess Shakti.
Eat only Satvik food
During these nine days of Navratri, food should be sattvic and vegetarian. Avoid meat, onions, garlic, and tamasic foods. This practice purifies the body and imparts divine power to the spiritual practice. Many devotees also observe celibacy during this period, which further enhances the power of the spiritual practice.
Keep the light of the eternal flame alive
During Ghatasthapana, light a lamp and ignite the eternal flame. This flame should burn continuously for the nine days of Navratri. This is considered a symbol of Mother Goddess's blessings.
Offer food according to the form of the Goddess.
Each day of Navratri worships a different form of Goddess Durga. Therefore, offerings, flowers, and prasad should be made according to the goddess being worshipped on that particular day. Doing so multiplies the effect of the puja and pleases the Goddess.
Importance of Kanya Pujan
Worshiping girls is of utmost importance during Navratri. Devotees may worship one girl every day, or invite nine girls on the eighth and ninth day of the month and perform the ritual. Respect the girls, offer them offerings and clothes, and bid them farewell with love. It is believed that Goddess Durga herself resides within girls.
