News Topical, Digital Desk : Have you ever wondered how our bodies convert food into energy or why some people are at higher risk of heart disease? The answer to all these questions lies in a complex process deep within our bodies called metabolism.

Recently, scientists have made a very exciting discovery. They have identified more than 750 genes that control small molecules in our blood, such as lipids and amino acids. These molecules are essential for every chemical process in our bodies, including digesting food, growing, and producing energy.

Why is this discovery so special?

This research analyzed genetic data from nearly 450,000 individuals from the UK Biobank, including those of European, African, and Asian descent. Most notably, these metabolic-regulating genes were found to be nearly identical across ethnicities and even between men and women. This suggests that these findings may apply to populations worldwide.

This research has revealed several things:

  • Identification of new genes: Scientists have also discovered genes that were previously unknown and play important roles in metabolism. This opens a new avenue for understanding human health and disease.
  • Link to diseases: It has also been found that these genes that control blood molecules are often linked to genes that put us at higher risk of certain diseases.

Effect on heart diseases

This discovery could have the greatest potential in fighting heart disease. Scientists have discovered a gene called "VEG" that regulates good cholesterol (HDL) . This discovery could help develop new and effective drugs to prevent heart disease.

"We can now systematically map the genetic control of hundreds of blood molecules, something never before possible. This will help us understand disease risk and identify genes that alter metabolism," says Martijn Zoodsma, lead author of the study.

So the next time you think about your health, remember that every drop of your blood tells a story about your genes, and scientists are trying to understand that story so we can all live healthier lives.
