Devotees of Lord Shiva observe fasts in the month of Sawan especially on Mondays, perform Abhishek of Shivling and offer various items to Lord Shiva (Sawan 2025).
But many times in devotion, we unknowingly offer some such material on Shivling, which is considered forbidden according to the scriptures. Therefore, it is important that we know what is auspicious to offer to Lord Shiva (Sawan 2025 tips) and what should be avoided. Complete information about this is given below.
What should not be offered on Shivlinga?
There are some things which are prohibited in the scriptures to be offered on Shivling. In true devotion, it is important that we keep these things in mind and maintain the sanctity of worship-
Ketaki flowers
According to the Puranas, once Ketaki told a lie to Lord Shiva. Since then this flower is not offered on Shivling. Do not offer Ketaki flower on Shivling during worship.
Basil leaves
Tulsi Mata is dear to Lord Vishnu, its use in the worship of Lord Shiva is prohibited. Therefore, do not offer Tulsi leaves to Mahadev, the God of Gods.
Shredded or dried bael leaves
Shiva is very fond of fresh, clean and three-leafed Bel leaves. Offering broken or dry leaves is considered inauspicious.
Scarlet flowers and jasmine
These flowers are offered to the divine powers. Lord Shiva loves flowers of calm and sattvik colors.
flowers with strong fragrance
Lord Shiva does not like flowers with very strong fragrance. Such flowers are not considered suitable for his calm, satvik and simple nature. Therefore, flowers like Kevada, Juhi, Kadamba, Baheda, Vaijayanti, Champa and Ketaki are considered prohibited in Shiva worship.
offering water from a conch shell
The conch was obtained from the churning of the ocean and was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Therefore, water should not be offered from the conch on the Shivling. According to the scriptures, offering these things on the Shivling disrupts the purity of worship and it is not in accordance with the likings of Lord Shiva . Simplicity and purity are supreme in Shiva bhakti.
