According to the traditions, when Krishna Paksha comes, the idol of Khatu Shyam is decorated in Shyam Varna i.e. dark colour. During this time, he is decorated with sandalwood and other special materials, due to which a glimpse of yellow colour is seen in the idol, which makes Baba's dark form look even more divine.

It is said that when the Shukla Paksha arrives, Baba Shyam is prepared in the form of Shaligram. Due to this, a glimpse of black color is seen in his form. On the day of Amavasya, Baba is anointed with various types of liquids, due to which the idol appears in its original form. This black color is a symbol of his divinity.

According to religious beliefs, the idol of Khatu Shyam Ji appears in Shyam Varn (yellow) form for 23 days in a month and in Shaligram (black) form for 7 days. This color change may be a mystery for the devotees, but it is a part of the centuries-old tradition of the temple. Through this tradition, Baba is decorated in different forms, which also shows his leelas.
