According to the story described in Ramayana, once during the exile, Lord Shri Ram, along with Lakshman ji, had gone to get the material for Pinddaan. Then Mother Sita heard the voice of King Dasharath and she felt that King Dasharath was standing in front of her.
Then she thought that maybe he would be in great pain, then she decided to perform the Pind Daan of King Dasharatha, but she thought that how can she perform the Pind Daan of her father-in-law when she has a son.
made them witnesses
Then she heard the voice of King Dasharath, who was saying, "O Sita! Daughter-in-law is also an integral part of the family. I will not get salvation after the time passes, so it is my wish that you only perform my Pind Daan."
Then Mother Sita reached the bank of the Falgu river to perform the Pind Daan of King Dasharath and taking water in her palm, she performed the Pind Daan of King Dasharath considering the Falgu river, the cow, the Ketaki flower and the Banyan tree as witnesses. With this, the soul of King Dasharath was freed from the earth and went to the other world. While leaving, she also blessed Mother Sita.
Only the Banyan tree told the truth
When Lord Shri Ram and Lakshman ji returned, Mother Sita told them the whole story. After hearing this, Ram ji was surprised, then Mother Sita asked the four witnesses made during Pinddaan to tell the truth.
But due to fear, the Falgu river, cow and Ketaki flower flatly denied that they had seen Mother Sita performing Pind Daan for King Dasharath. Then only the Banyan tree accepted that Mother Sita had performed Pind Daan for the king.
I got this curse
When the Falgu river, the cow and the Ketaki flower lied, Mother Sita cursed them all. Mother Sita cursed the Falgu river that all its water would dry up. The cow was cursed that it would have to eat the leftovers of humans. Mother Sita cursed the Ketaki flower that it would not be used in worship. Because the Banyan tree supported the truth, Mother Sita blessed it with a long life.
