News Topical, Digital Desk : The Railways has gradually begun to distance itself from the responsibility for food and beverages served to passengers on board trains or at stations. In fact, the process of indirectly handing over the railway's catering and beverage services to the market has already begun. The Railway IRCTC has closed its base kitchens and started operating cluster kitchens. In the name of competition, passengers have been given the option of ordering food through cloud kitchens. The railways will no longer be responsible for the quality of the food.

Who currently handles the responsibility of catering in the Railways?

It's worth noting that the Indian Catering and Erto Railway Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is responsible for the railway's catering services. IRCTC used to purchase raw materials from the market. The food was then prepared in the base kitchen. IRCTC used to contract this food to a private company.

Now, base kitchens are being closed and cluster kitchens are being opened. According to railway spokesperson Dilip Kumar, the companies that serve food will prepare the food in the cluster kitchens. During this time, railway personnel will oversee the hygienic preparation of the food. It should be noted that until now, food was prepared in the kitchens for serving on various railway trains.

Some reports claim that in addition to cluster kitchens, cloud kitchens are also being promoted. Passengers can order food from the market during their travels using the Rail One app or other apps. However, the railways will not be responsible for this food.

Why is the Railways taking this step?

Regarding these new changes, a railway official stated that this step is being taken to improve the quality of food on trains and stations. If the responsibility for purchasing food and drinks, preparing it in the kitchen, and then serving it yourself is unified, complaints cannot be avoided.

The official said that under the current system, there are complaints of blame shifting, which often causes significant inconvenience to passengers. He also explained that cloud kitchens are an option for passengers so that they do not rely solely on rail catering.
