News Topical, Digital Desk : Punjab News: Important news is emerging for the villages of Punjab, and a major announcement has been made regarding this. In protest against the decision to expand the municipal corporation's boundaries, the panchayats of 14 villages held a joint press conference in Mouli Baidwan village and made a major announcement. The panchayats clearly stated that the government has issued a dictatorial order by incorporating the villages into the corporation without consulting the panchayats, which will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Airport Road jam on 10 December
Additionally, the Panchayat representatives warned that if the government did not withdraw the notification, they would join with the Panchayats of all the villages in the constituency and block Airport Road on December 10th. They also decided to approach the court if necessary. The Panchayats alleged that joining the corporation would burden the villages with unnecessary taxes and completely destroy rural infrastructure.
The land and rights of the villages are being snatched away – Sarpanch
Sarpanches stated that villages are being stripped of their land and rights in the name of development. If villages are incorporated into municipal corporations, the burden of house taxes, water taxes, and sewerage taxes will fall directly on villagers' pockets. Until now, many services provided by panchayats were free or at very low prices. However, after incorporation into municipal corporations, water, sewerage, street lighting, and sanitation fees will increase significantly.
He cited the example of Mataur village, which was incorporated into the municipal corporation 30 years ago, but even today, sanitation remains poor, with sewerage overflowing in many areas and no rainwater drainage system. The situation is similar in other villages.
The government wants to seize land worth crores of rupees.
The sarpanches stated that the villagers earn their living through dairy farming, but after being incorporated into the municipal corporation, livestock ownership will be restricted, leading to increased unemployment. Even seven decades after independence, many villages still have mud houses. Grants from the panchayats for house construction will also cease after the merger. They alleged that the government wants to annex the villages and seize land worth crores of rupees, but this will not be allowed.
