News Topical, Digital Desk : Pitru Paksha has a special significance in Sanatan Dharma. During this period, ancestors reside on earth. For this, tarpan and pinddaan are performed for ancestors. Worship of ancestors is done from the first day of Pitru Paksha till Amavasya Tithi.

There is a religious belief that by performing tarpan and pinddaan for the ancestors, the soul of the ancestors attains salvation. Also, the blessings of the ancestors shower on a particular person. Pitru Paksha 2025

Pitru Paksha starts from Bhadrapad Purnima. Whereas, Pitru Paksha ends on Amavasya Tithi of Ashwin month. On this day Sarvapitri Amavasya is celebrated. On the day of Sarvapitri Amavasya, the final offering of the ancestors is done. After this, the ancestors return to their world.

Pitru Paksha 2025 Dates

  • Bhadrapada Purnima Shraddha is on 7th September.
  • On 8th September, there is Pratipada Shraddha.  
  • Dwitiya Shraddha is on 9th September.
  • On September 10, there is Tritiya and Chaturthi Shraddha.
  • Panchami Shraddha is on 11th September.
  • Shashthi Shraddha is on 12th September.
  • Saptami Shraddha is on 13th September.
  • Ashtami Shraddha is on 14th September.
  • Navami Shraddha is on 15th September.
  • Dashami Shraddha is on 16th September.
  • Ekadasha Shraddha is on 17th September.
  • Dwadashi Shraddha is on 18th September.
  • Trayodashi Shraddha is on 19th September.
  • Chaturdashi Shraddha is on 20th September.
  • On 21st September is Sarvapitre Amavasya.

Why is it forbidden to eat Sattu? (Pitru Paksha Niyam)

Tarpan and Pinddaan of ancestors are performed on the banks of river Falgu in Gayaji, Bihar. It is contained in the scriptures that ancestors attain salvation by performing Tarpan and Pinddaan of ancestors in Gayaji, Bihar. The holy land is called Gayaji after the name of the demon Gayasur.

Pretshila mountain is 10 kilometers away from Gayaji. Shraddha and Pinddaan of the ancestors who died untimely are performed on the peak of this mountain. It is believed that by performing Pinddaan on Pretshila mountain, the ancestors who died untimely attain salvation as soon as possible. At the same time, Pinddaan of the ancestors who died untimely is done with Sattu. For this, eating Sattu is prohibited during Pitru Paksha.
