News Topical, Digital Desk : The US Congress missed a midnight deadline to pass the 2026 budget to fund the operations of all agencies, leading to a partial shutdown of the US government on Saturday.

Lawmakers said the shutdown could be short, as the House is expected to approve the Senate-backed funding deal early next week.

Let us tell you that in October 2025 last year, due to the funding bill getting stuck in the Parliament, there was a shutdown in America for 43 days, which was said to be the longest shutdown in the history of this country.

Blockage of budget funding

The talks collapsed amid anger among Democrats over the deaths of two protesters at the hands of federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. According to reports, the incident stalled discussions on new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Without a deal before the deadline, many non-essential government functions will be shut down until Congress approves either a temporary or full-year funding measure.

When the House reconvenes, lawmakers will try to muster the support needed to pass the Senate-backed deal.

Direct target on the government

Senate Democratic Minority Whip Dick Durbin posted on social media, writing, "This administration is making Americans less safe."

Durbin further wrote, 'Instead of going after drug smugglers, child sexual abusers, and human traffickers, the Trump administration is wasting precious resources targeting peaceful protesters in Chicago and Minneapolis.'
