News Topical, Digital Desk : The geography of global terrorism has shifted once again. Pakistan has topped the list of countries most affected by terrorism. Before Pakistan, the West African country of Burkina Faso topped this list.
Pakistan has been ranked first among countries most affected by terrorism in the Institute for Economics and Peace's Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report. Pakistan has been among the top ten countries in each of the last 12 editions.
According to the GTI 2026 report, Burkina Faso has now moved to second place on this list, while the West African country of Niger is at third place.
Pakistan tops in terrorism
According to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report, there were 1,045 terrorist incidents in Pakistan in 2025, resulting in 1,139 deaths and 1,595 injuries. This is the worst figure for Pakistan in the last decade.
Militant groups, primarily the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have used Afghan soil as a launchpad, safe haven, and training center.
The TTP has waged a sustained campaign against Pakistani security forces and civilians from there. In 2025, TTP attacks increased by 24%, bringing the number of incidents to 595 and the number of deaths to 637.
The Balochistan Liberation Army has also contributed to Pakistan's rise to the top of the GTI. A case in point was the hijacking of the Jaffar Express passenger train near Quetta. In this incident, 442 passengers were taken hostage and dozens were killed.
India at number 13
India, ranked 13th globally with a GTI score of 6.428, is third in South Asia after Pakistan and Afghanistan.
India recorded a significant improvement in its terrorism profile in 2025. The number of terrorist attacks declined by 43% compared to 2024.
