News Topical, Digital Desk : Pakistan's Shahbaz government is steadily increasing the power of Field Marshal Asim Munir. The Pakistani government has formally appointed Field Marshal Asim Munir to the new position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). This now gives Munir  the power to manage Pakistan's nuclear weapons and missile systems.

In fact, only last month the Shahbaz government had created this new post, under which work will be done to establish better coordination between the three forces of Pakistan - Army, Navy and Air Force.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said the appointment will be for a period of five years. The Prime Minister also granted a two-year extension to Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar.

Pakistan is continuously increasing Munir's power

It's worth noting that India defeated Pakistan during Operation Sindoor in May. Pakistan's Director General of Police (DGMO) finally intervened and pleaded with India to stop the conflict. Despite this, Asim Munir falsely propagated throughout Pakistan that Pakistan had won against India. Subsequently, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif promoted him to Field Marshal. Since then, Munir has been, in effect, Pakistan's unofficial king.

Whose post did Munir terminate to become CDF?

The CDF reportedly replaces the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, a position that was recently abolished. The President of Pakistan has congratulated Munir on his appointment to the CDF. The President's approval also puts to rest rumors that Munir's appointment might be delayed.

Munir was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff in 2022. In 2024, his tenure was extended by five years.

Munir now holds Pakistan's nuclear button.

Munir's appointment as Chief of Defense Forces has given him immense power. This is a new and powerful military post in a nuclear-armed country, making him the most powerful military figure in the country. The CDF position not only consolidates authority over all three service branches (Army, Navy, and Air Force) but also manages the country's nuclear weapons and missile systems. This position makes Munir the most powerful military figure in the country.

Munir's promotion has always been controversial.

It should be noted that Munir had been promoted to the rank of Field Marshal only a few months earlier. This was the second such promotion in Pakistan's history. The previous rank was held by General Ayub Khan, who led the 1965 India-Pakistan War.

Pakistan also suffered a crushing defeat during the 1965 war. However, to mitigate its humiliation, Pakistan honored General Ayub Khan.

Pakistan government is kind to Munir

It's surprising that the Shahbaz government is being overly kind to Asim Munir. While Asim Munir's army is bringing shame to Pakistan around the world, the Shahbaz government is rewarding him with promotions.

Recently, Pakistan's Parliament passed a law that allows Asim Munir to remain in uniform for life and is not subject to arrest. This provision has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition, particularly the PTI party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The PTI argues that granting such broad powers and protections undermines the very fabric of democracy.
