News Topical, Digital Desk : The Government of India has notified the Determination and Collection of National Highway Fee Rates (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026.
The aim is to ensure compliance with toll regulations on national highways. Any outstanding toll will now have to pay double the amount.
This amendment is effective from March 17 and provides a systematic and technology-based mechanism in cases of default in payment of user fees.
Who will have to pay?
According to PIB, through this amendment, the definition of unpaid user fees has also been included by changing the rules.
This refers to a toll that applies to a vehicle whose passage has been recorded by the electronic toll collection (ETC) infrastructure, but for which the applicable user fee has not yet been received.
Under this, electronic notices will be issued to registered vehicle owners, detailing the vehicle's details, the date and location of the seizure, and the amount to be paid. These notices will be sent via SMS, email, mobile-based applications, or other electronic means.
