New Delhi: Niti Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam said on Wednesday that India is committed to climate-friendly development but fossil fuels are currently essential for the country's economic growth.

Addressing an event, Subramanian said that the market alone cannot solve the problem of climate change. He also said that the Commission is working with the states to develop a path to achieve the net-zero emissions target.

The CEO of the Commission said, "India is one of the countries on track to meet its climate goals under the 2015 Paris Agreement. We are committed to achieving the zero carbon emission target by 2070, even though India accounts for less than four per cent of the world's carbon emissions."

Committed to Climate Fund

India has committed to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel based power installed capacity by 2030. Regarding this, he said that the government is committed to providing more funds for climate finance.

Even though India's per capita energy consumption is half the global average, the Niti Aayog CEO underlined that states do not know how to build green projects.
