Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has issued a show-cause notice to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking his response on allegations related to land allotments made by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to various persons, including his wife Parvati, after a delegation of BJP MLAs submitted a memorandum to him on 25 July.
Demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister
The BJP demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI and the Chief Minister's resignation. This move has infuriated the ruling Congress. On Thursday, the state government 'advised' the Governor in a stern tone to withdraw the notice.
Raj Bhavan sources said, 'Since a memorandum has been submitted, it becomes necessary for the Governor to seek a reply from the Chief Minister. Accordingly, the Governor has asked the Chief Minister to respond.'
Gehlot has asked in the notice why permission was not given to prosecute in connection with the alleged MUDA land allotment scam. The state government says that the governor's move attempts to destabilize the Congress government. On Thursday, the state cabinet considered the show cause notice.
The Council of Ministers alleged that the move was a gross abuse of the constitutional office of the Governor and said there was a planned attempt to destabilise the lawfully elected majority government in Karnataka for political reasons.
DK Shivakumar said this
After a five-hour cabinet meeting, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar termed the governor's decision as a murder of democracy and the Constitution. He said the cabinet had 'advised' the governor to withdraw the notice. Shivakumar said, 'There is no question of a lawsuit.'
He said, "I hope the Governor will withdraw the notice and maintain the dignity of his office despite any pressure." The Deputy Chief Minister said that the Governor promptly issued the show cause notice, bypassing all procedural requirements.
Siddaramaiah has been accused of MUDA scam
It is noteworthy that in the MUDA scam, it is alleged that Siddaramaiah's wife Parvati was allotted a compensatory plot in a posh area of Mysore, whose property value was higher than the place that was acquired by MUDA. Meanwhile, Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. She said that the Chief Minister should face an investigation into corruption and misuse of power allegations.
