News Topical, Digital Desk : Diabetes is often considered a disease that requires lifelong medication and caution . However , AIIMS experts have revealed the successful results of a surgery that offers new hope for patients struggling with uncontrolled diabetes . It is claimed that after a mere two-hour procedure , patients' conditions improved within 24 hours, and many no longer needed medication.

According to Dr. Manjunath , Additional Professor in the Department of Surgery at AIIMS , 120 patients underwent this procedure over the past year or so, 35 of whom came solely for diabetes treatment. The doctor claims that all of these patients experienced very effective blood sugar control, and many were able to discontinue their medications completely.

These diabetes patients can undergo surgery

This surgery is considered useful for patients with diabetes that has persisted for two years or more, whose HbA1c level is consistently above 7.5 , and whose blood sugar remains uncontrolled despite taking three or more medications . In such cases, this procedure may prove to be an effective option if medication and standard treatment do not provide relief.

In contrast, people who have been diabetic for more than 15 years , who require insulin intakes of up to 100 units per day , or whose HbA1c is already around 6.5, are not suitable for this surgery.

Big benefit for senior patients suffering from uncontrolled sugar

According to doctors, a 65-year-old MP was among those who underwent surgery . Obesity and long-standing uncontrolled diabetes were his major problems. His HbA1c had reached 11.7 , and despite four medications, his blood sugar remained uncontrolled. Five months after the surgery, he no longer needed any antidiabetic medication and his blood sugar levels are stable.

New hope found after heart attack

A woman who had recently suffered a heart attack was also diagnosed with severe diabetes while being treated in the cardiology department . She was referred to the surgery department. Her desire was to at least be relieved of her diabetes . She underwent surgery in May of this year, and her sugar levels have been consistently under control since then .

How does this modern surgery work?

Dr. Manjunath explains that this procedure is based on the principles of metabolic surgery. The stomach is reduced in size to a narrow tube. The part of the stomach that produces various hormones is isolated from direct contact with food. The food pipe is then connected to the intestines through a bypass technique. This modification induces hormonal changes in the body that are extremely helpful in controlling blood sugar .
