Kolkata: The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court's decision to grant bail to West Bengal student society leader Sayan Lahiri. On Monday, a bench headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will hear the Bengal government's petition.

The High Court had granted bail to the student leader

In fact, the Calcutta High Court on Friday granted bail to West Bengal Student Society leader Sayan Lahiri. It has been claimed about Sayan Lahiri that he was one of the organizers of the rally organized to the state secretariat on August 27 to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here. West Bengal Student Society was one of the two organizations that called for 'Nabanna Abhijan'.

Lahiri was arrested for playing an active role in leading the rally on the evening of August 27. Police said that there was violence in the rally, in which public and private property was damaged. The Bengal government's petition filed in the Supreme Court against Sayan Lahiri's bail states that Lahiri promoted violent movement under the guise of peaceful movement. The petition has described Lahiri's protest as illegal.
