New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel said India has reduced new annual HIV infections by 44 per cent since 2010. India has outpaced the global rate of reduction in new annual HIV infections, which has seen a global reduction of just 39 per cent.
Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel gave this information while speaking at a high-level event at the United Nations. The theme was "Reviving Multilateralism: Recommitting to End AIDS Together", which was organized by UNAIDS, Global Fund and PEPFAR.
This announcement by Anupriya Patel underlines India's commitment to stopping the HIV/AIDS epidemic, reflecting a promising trend in public health efforts within the country. Patel emphasized India's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of eliminating HIV/AIDS, a public health threat, by 2030.
He underlined the significant progress made by India in this direction, citing the latest 'India HIV Projections 2023' report. The report shows that India currently has over 2.5 million people living with HIV. However, through concerted efforts, the prevalence of HIV among adults has remained at 0.2 percent and the estimated annual new HIV infections are around 66,400. This reflects a strong national response to the HIV/AIDS challenge.''
