News Topical, Digital Desk : The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) on Thursday said it has achieved its first breakthrough in the 21-km long tunnel being built between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and Shilphata in Thane for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. The 2.7-km long tunnel has been successfully completed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), NHSRCL said.

The feat marks a significant leap forward in India's first bullet train project, which aims to link Mumbai and Ahmedabad via a high-speed rail corridor, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing transportation efficiency between the two financial hubs.

A 21 kilometer long tunnel is being constructed

NHSRCL said that this 21 km long tunnel will be a crucial part of the high-speed rail corridor, in which 16 km will be built using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and the remaining 5 km through New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) between Shilphata and Ghansoli. It is worth noting that the tunnel also has a 7 km marine section under the Thane Creek.

To expedite the tunnelling process in the NATM section, an additional operated intermediate tunnel (ADIT) was constructed, which enabled simultaneous excavation from both Ghansoli and Shilphata ends. Out of the total NATM section, about 1.62 km has been excavated from the Shilphata side.

NHSRCL gave important information

NHSRCL said that extensive safety measures have been implemented at the site, including installation of ground settlement markers, piezometers, inclinometers, strain gauges and biometric access control systems. These are designed to ensure safe and controlled tunnelling work without affecting nearby infrastructure or habitations, it added.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor project will cost Rs 1.08 lakh crore

Let us tell you that the total cost of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor project has been estimated at Rs 1.08 lakh crore. The central government will pay Rs 10,000 crore to NHSRCL, while Gujarat and Maharashtra have to pay Rs 5,000-5,000 crore. The remaining amount is to be paid by Japan through loan at 0.1 percent interest.
