News Topical, Digital Desk : Tensions are deepening in the Middle East. Israel carried out air strikes in Qatar on Tuesday and claimed that senior Hamas leaders were present there. But in the meantime, big news has come out that Israel's intelligence agency Mossad had rejected the plan to kill Hamas officials on the ground.
According to the Washington Post report, Mossad chief David Barania opposed this move. He believed that doing so could harm his relations with Qatar. Qatar has long been hosting Hamas leaders and also plays an important role in ceasefire talks.
What did Hamas claim?
Hamas claimed that its acting leader Khalil al-Hayya was not killed in the attack but that his relatives, close aides and a Qatari official were killed.
According to the report, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu may have now lost patience with the talks. Israeli Army Chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir also objected to the timing of this attack. But Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Defense Minister Israel Katz supported Netanyahu.
What did Mossad say?
Mossad believed that Hamas leaders could be targeted later. One official said, "We can kill them after a year, two or four years and Mossad knows how to do it. Then why now?"
However, Qatar described the Israeli attack as state terrorism and a betrayal of the negotiation process. Israel, on the other hand, defended it, saying it was a rare occasion when senior Hamas leaders had gathered in one place.
'7 October attack was like 9/11'
Prime Minister Netanyahu said that this attack is a response to Hamas' recent Jerusalem attack, in which four Israeli soldiers were killed. Comparing it to America's 9/11 attack, he said, "Our October 7 attack was like 9/11. If countries give shelter to terrorists, we will destroy them ourselves."
