News Topical, Digital Desk : 40 people were killed in an attack on a funeral in El-Obeid, an important town in Sudan's central Kordofan region. The United Nations ( UN) confirmed the attack on Wednesday, but did not say when or who carried out the attack. The UN humanitarian agency ( OCHA) said the situation in the Kordofan region is worsening, with violence and attacks increasing.
Fighting between the army and the paramilitary RSF ( RSF) in Sudan, which has been ongoing since 2023, has now spread to new areas. Local sources reported that an attack on a funeral in El-Obeid on Tuesday killed 40 civilians and injured dozens, according to OCHA .
RSF occupation in Darfur
Earlier, the RSF had captured El-Fasher, the last army stronghold in West Darfur. Now, there are fears that the RSF may launch an attack on Kordofan, threatening to further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
Those who fled El-Fasher reported that RSF operatives gang-raped women. " They would come at night and rape women in front of everyone. If someone couldn't pay, they would take their daughters, " said Amira (name changed), a mother of four.
Victimized women sought help
According to the medical organization Doctors Without Borders ( MSF) , more than 300 women have sought help after experiencing sexual violence. The attack follows a recent RSF offensive that displaced more than 380,000 people.
Following the fall of El-Fasher, the RSF took control of all of Darfur, while the Sudanese army now controls the north, east, and central parts of the country. The UN alleges that the RSF receives weapons from the UAE , while the army receives support from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Iran.
America's suggestion
The US has offered a ceasefire to both sides, which Defense Minister Hassan Qabroun refused to accept, saying, " We are ready for war, it is our national right. " White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said the US is working toward peace with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE .
The International Criminal Court (ICC) said the crimes committed in El-Fasher may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity. Speaking at an event in Qatar, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, " Now is the time for both sides to come to the negotiating table and end this nightmare of violence. "
