News Topical, Digital Desk : According to Hindu mythology, Prayagraj is called "Tirtharaj," meaning the king of all pilgrimage sites. The Matsya Purana and Padma Purana mention that when the entire universe was about to be created, Lord Brahma performed the "Ashwamedha Yagya" here. This first yajna is the reason why the place was named "Prayag" (pra - first, yag - sacrifice).

But the drops of nectar are considered the primary reason for the Magh Mela. According to legend, when the gods and demons fought over the pot of nectar obtained from the churning of the ocean, some drops of nectar fell at four locations on Earth: Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. During the month of Magh, the waters of the confluence of Prayagraj become like nectar itself, which is why bathing here is considered to bring salvation.

Kalpavas: A Difficult Test of Restraint and Sadhana

The most unique feature of the Magh Mela is "Kalpavas." Living a virtuous life on the sands of the Sangam for a full month is called Kalpavas. Kalpavasis sleep on the ground, eat only once a day, and bathe in the Ganges three times. It is believed that those who chant and meditate on the banks of the Sangam during the month of Magh are liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Major Bathing Festivals of Magh Mela 2026

In the year 2026, the Magh Mela will be at its peak on these key dates:

Makar Sankranti: The fair officially begins when the Sun moves northwards.

Mauni Amavasya: It is considered to be the biggest bathing festival, where meditation is done in silence.

Basant Panchami: There is an atmosphere like a royal bath with the worship of Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge.

Maghi Purnima: On this day the Kalpavas is completed.

Scientific and spiritual significance

From a spiritual perspective , the month of Magh is considered a time of energy accumulation. Scientifically, the Ganges' waters are at their peak during this time, possessing special minerals and medicinal properties that help boost the body's immunity and alleviate skin diseases. Taking a dip in the cold water during the harsh winter strengthens one's willpower.
