News Topical, Digital Desk : When a wave of faith surges on the sands of the Sangam, it is called the Magh Mela. The rules and traditions for devotees who perform Kalpavas here are very strict. However, hidden within these traditions is the path to salvation (Moksha Dwar). One of these important traditions is the Shaiyaa Daan.
What is Kalpvas and Shayya Daan?
Kalpvas means living a life of restraint and purity by residing on the banks of the Sangam for a specific period of time. According to religious scriptures and scholars, Kalpvas is considered complete only when the devotee donates charity according to their faith and ability. Of these, "shayya daan" (donating a bed and bedding items) is considered the most auspicious.
It is believed that during Kalpavas, a Kalpavasi sleeps on the ground and performs rigorous austerities. When their Kalpavas concludes, they donate their bed, mattress, sheets, pillow, and even cot for the comfort and happiness of others.
Religious significance of bed donation
Stories recounted in the Puranas indicate that donating a bed not only absolves the sins of this life but also brings peace to the ancestors. It is believed that a person who donates a bed, following the rites of passage, after a Kalpavas (a sacred ritual), does not have to endure the torments of Yamaloka after death and instead secures a place in heaven.
This donation isn't just a gift of an object, but rather symbolizes the spirit of sacrificing one's own comforts and serving others. According to astrological and spiritual beliefs, donating a bed soothes many horoscope defects and brings happiness and prosperity to the home.
What things should be kept in mind while donating?
A bed donation is not just a bed, but a complete bedding set. This usually includes:
New mattress and sheets
Pillow and blanket or quilt
If you can afford it, you can also provide a mosquito net and an umbrella. This donation should be made to a deserving Brahmin or a person in need with complete devotion, along with a donation.
