News Topical, Digital Desk : Amid the ongoing war between Iran and the US-Israel, the people of India are desperately waiting for LPG gas to keep their stoves burning. To fuel this very purpose, India has sailed two ships loaded with LPG through the blocked Strait of Hormuz and delivered them to Gujarat. However, these ships only carry so little gas that they will run out within hours of disembarking, and the wait will begin again for new ships carrying LPG to depart the Strait of Hormuz for India.

The two LPG-laden ships that crossed the Strait of Hormuz and entered India are Shivalik and Nanda Devi. Shivalik arrived at Mundra Port in Gujarat on March 16th, while Nanda Devi arrived at Vadinar Port, also in Gujarat. However, both ships carry only enough LPG to consume India in approximately 30 hours.

In fact, the Shivalik LPG vessel, which arrived in Mundra on March 16th with approximately 46,000 metric tons of gas. In terms of domestic cylinder filling, this gas can fill approximately 3.24 million domestic cylinders. The Nanda Devi, which arrived in India on March 17th, is carrying 47,700 metric tons of gas, and can fill approximately 3.361 million domestic cylinders. If the combined gas load on both ships is combined, the figure amounts to approximately 6.6 million domestic cylinders. India has a total of 330 million consumers, who book approximately 70 to 80 lakh cylinders daily. Government data shows that domestic LPG cylinder bookings were 8.88 million on March 13, 2026, and declined to 7.7 million the following day, March 14th.

If we look at daily consumption based on government data, the gas loaded on the Nanda Devi and Shivalik ships is only enough for a single day. Other data suggests that India consumes approximately 80,000 to 90,000 metric tons of domestic gas daily. So, it's easy to imagine that the dream of ending the LPG crisis based on the LPG loaded on the Shivalik and Nanda Devi ships is just a dream, and will only become a reality when either the Strait of Hormuz opens or at least two such ships cross the Strait of Hormuz to India every day.
