News Topical, Digital Desk : Mahadev is called "Trayambakam," meaning three-eyed. According to mythology, when Shiva opens his third eye, ignorance and evil are destroyed. But did you know that this third eye exists within all of us? Science knows it as the "Pineal Gland."
What is the Pineal Gland?
Right in the middle of our brain is a pea-sized gland called the pineal gland. According to experts in neuroscience and anatomy, this gland is sensitive to light. Even though it's located in darkness within the skull, it's connected to our eyes and our body's biological clock.
In spirituality, it's called the "Ajna Chakra." This gland is located in the brain, directly behind the spot where we apply a tilak or bindi. It's considered the physical manifestation of the "third eye."
Third Eye and Intuition
According to ancient Yoga Science, when a person is in deep meditation or Samadhi, his energy rises upwards and activates this third eye.
Seeing beyond sight: Just as Shiva's third eye sees the world as it 'really' is, an active pineal gland provides a person with deep understanding, intuition and foresight.
The melatonin connection: This gland produces the hormone melatonin, which regulates our sleep and mental peace. A calm and stable mind is the "Shiva element" where the third eye opens.
The balance of destruction and creation
According to the Shiva Purana and Upanishads, the third eye is known to destroy lust (kama). Scientifically, this means burning our lower thoughts and animal instincts in the fire of knowledge. When we awaken this center through meditation, our inner tension, anger, and ignorance are destroyed.
Lord Shiva's third eye teaches us that true vision is not that which looks outward, but that which dispels the darkness within us. Our minds are a storehouse of infinite potential, and the 'third eye' is the key to unlocking that potential.
