News Topical, Digital Desk : King Pandu is a major character in the Mahabharata, serving as the king of Hastinapur. Kunti and Madri were his wives. Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva were called Pandus because they were his sons. Dhritarashtra was older than Pandu, but because he was blind, Pandu was made the king of Hastinapur.
Why did the sage curse?
According to the story told in the Mahabharata , King Pandu once went hunting. During the hunt, he mistakenly shot the sage Kindama, mistaking him for a deer. At the time of his arrow, the sage was engaged in sexual intercourse with his wife.
Enraged, the sage cursed him, saying, "You will die in the same state I am in. If you try to have sex with your wife, you will face death."
Then how were the Pandavas born?
Due to a sage's curse, King Pandu was unable to have children. Kunti then told Pandu that Sage Durvasa had given her a mantra, using which she could invoke any deity and ask for the blessing of a son. Kunti also shared this mantra with Madri, who invoked different deities and prayed for a son, as follows:
- Yudhishthira - Son of Kunti and Dharmaraja (Yama).
- Bhima: Son of Kunti and Vayudev.
- Arjuna: Son of Kunti and Indradev.
- Nakula and Sahadeva: Sons of Madri and the Ashvins (twin gods).
This is why the king died
Once, King Pandu became sexually attracted to Madri and forgot the curse imposed by the sage Kindama. When he attempted to make love to her, he died instantly under the curse. Madri, acknowledging herself as the cause of King Pandu's death, gave up her life. Kunti then returned to Hastinapur with the five Pandavas.
