
News Topical, Digital Desk : A case of mass killing of hundreds of dogs has come to light in Kerala. An activist of the Animal Rescue Team of Idukki has filed a complaint against the officials of Munnar Panchayat that hundreds of dogs were killed recently. After receiving the complaint, the police have registered a case under several sections.
A video is going viral on social media in which stray dogs are being caught and taken away in a panchayat vehicle and this video has been broadcast on several TV channels. The complainant has alleged that the officials tried to secretly remove the dead bodies of the dogs from the place where they were buried.
What do the activists have to say?
"We had received information that people associated with the panchayat were taking clandestine steps to transfer the bodies to another place. We lodged a complaint based on this," he said on Sunday. A police officer confirmed that a case has been registered based on the complaint, although no concrete evidence has been found yet. A case has been registered against the driver of the panchayat vehicle.
What did the police say?
Police said, "We have not found any evidence yet to confirm the allegations. Investigation is on." The case has been registered under Section 325 (killing or maiming an animal) of the Indian Justice Code and provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The incident comes at a time when the menace of stray dogs is increasing in Munnar and the panchayat is facing pressure and criticism from residents.
