During the hearing, a lawyer argued that the situation was emergency-like, with monitoring the issue being the real problem. CJI Surya Kant responded, "We know the causes, and now we need solutions." The CJI added that every year, the pollution debate begins around Diwali, and as soon as winter ends, the issue disappears.
The problem will be solved not just by talking but by concrete steps: CJI
While hearing the case, the Supreme Court stated that the air quality problem will be solved not by mere words but by concrete action. The lawyer explained to the court that the AQI (Air Quality Index) is determined by an expert committee. CJI Suryakant stated that he would also examine whether the government has established an expert committee and what solutions could be found through it.
Judges do not have any magic wand – CJI
The Supreme Court has said that the matter will be taken up again on Monday, and it will also be examined what steps the government and agencies can take to clean the air. The CJI said that this is a very important issue, a problem for every resident of the NCR. The CJI said that judges do not have a magic wand to clean the air today. We need to know the real reasons, and there are many reasons, not just one. The CJI said that only experts can provide solutions. Hopefully, the government has taken some steps.
AQI in Delhi in very poor category
The national capital recorded an AQI of 355 on Thursday, which is considered very poor. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
