News Topical, Digital Desk : On Ashadh Shukla Dwitiya Tithi i.e. 27 June 2025, the famous Rath Yatra (Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025) of Lord Jagannath is going to start from the Jagannath temple in Odisha. On this day, Lord Jagannath Nandighosha, his elder brother Balabhadra Taladhwaj and sister Subhadra will go to their aunt's house Gundicha temple on a chariot named Darpadalan.
Before this, water will be brought from Indradyumna Sarovar, which is about half a kilometer away from the Gundicha Mata temple. The story of bringing water from this lake is very interesting. It is also linked to a boon given by Lord Vishnu to King Indradyumna.
It has been described in Skanda Purana. Let us know the importance of this lake and also why Lord Vishnu gave a boon to King Indradyumna and what it was.
King Indradyumna had installed the idols
In ancient times Indradyumna was the king of Malava state. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Once Lord Vishnu appeared in the dream of King Indradyumna and instructed him to install the idol of Lord Jagannath.
After this, King Indradyumna installed the idols of Lord Jagannath in Puri. It is said that after Lord Krishna left his body, his last rites were performed. But, his heart was not burnt. Then the Pandavas immersed it in the river.
This Brahma substance was found by King Indradyumna in the form of a log. He installed it in the idols. Even today, when the idols are replaced, that Brahma substance is taken out from the old idols and installed in the new idols.
This boon was given to King Indradyumna
Lord Vishnu had given this boon to King Indradyumna that I will come and stay at the banks of your pilgrimage every year. The person who will bathe there according to the rituals and see Jagannath, Balram and Subhadra for 7 days will get my blessings.
Why is the lake so sacred?
There is a story behind this too. It is said that King Indradyumna had donated a thousand cows to the Brahmins during the Ashwamedha Yagya. Where these cows were tied, a deep pit was formed by their hooves. This later turned into a pond. Due to the accumulation of cow urine and water in this pond, the king used it during the Ashwamedha Yagya.
In this way, this pond is considered as sacred and great as a pilgrimage place. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu once brought water from this pond to purify the Gundicha temple before the Rath Yatra. After using this water, this tradition has been going on till date.
