There are a total of 3 chariots in this Rath Yatra, which millions of devotees from the country and abroad come to see. The name of Lord Jagannath's chariot is Nandighosha, which moves at the back in this Rath Yatra. Balabhadra's chariot is at the front, which is named Taladhwaj. Subhadra's chariot moves in the middle, which is named Darpadalan. 

 

These chariots are made from special 'Daruk' wood. No nails, thorns or metal are used in making these three huge chariots. The construction of the chariot starts every year on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.

 

One gets the merits of thousands of yagyas 

It is believed that participating in this Rath Yatra or seeing it in person gives the virtue of a thousand yagyas. Participating in this Rath Yatra of Puri's Jagannath Temple, one of the four Dhams, destroys sins. By the grace of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi, one enjoys the pleasures of this world and attains salvation.

This grand and divine Rath Yatra takes place in Puri in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadh. It rains during that time. It is said that till date there has never been an occasion when it did not rain during the Rath Yatra. 

 

The descendants of the kings do the cleaning 

During the Jagannath Puri Yatra, cleaning is done with a gold broom. This tradition started in ancient times and is still continuing today. Earlier, the kings used to clean the front of the chariot with a gold-handled broom. In present times, the descendants of the kings sweep the front of the chariot, after which the journey begins.
