Many times people ignore the symptoms of heart attack thinking it to be gas or acidity pain, which delays treatment and can lead to a life-threatening situation. Where is the pain and what kind of pain is it?

Pain of heart attack-

  • Pain in a heart attack usually occurs in the middle or left side of the chest.
  • This pain may radiate to the jaw, left shoulder, back or arm.
  • The pain feels like burning, pressure or heaviness, as if something heavy is placed on the chest.
  • This pain does not reduce even after rest and persists continuously.

Gas pain-

  • Gas pain occurs in the upper part of the stomach or the lower part of the chest.
  • This pain often occurs in the form of cramps or twinges and keeps changing.
  • It provides relief from sour burps, flatulence or passing of gas.

 

Pay attention to other symptoms

Symptoms seen with heart attack-

 

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Sweating (especially cold sweats)
  • feeling dizzy or faint
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • sudden weakness or nervousness

Symptoms seen with gas problem-

 

  • Heaviness in the stomach
  • More trouble after eating
  • belching or stomach noises
  • Pain is temporary and relieved with passing of gas

Duration and intensity of pain

  • The pain of a heart attack usually lasts more than 15-20 minutes and increases gradually.
  • Gas pain can last from a few minutes to a few hours, but it tends to come and go.

What are the reasons why the pain increases or decreases?

  • Heart attack- Pain may increase with physical activity (such as walking, climbing stairs) or stress. It does not get relieved even after resting.
  • Gas pain- may worsen after eating but is relieved by burping or passing gas.

What to do if you feel symptoms of a heart attack?

  • Contact a doctor immediately or call an ambulance.
  • Stay calm and don't move too much.
  • Loosen your clothes to reduce breathing problems.
