Uddhav Thackeray faction leader Sanjay Raut had alleged that the Somaiya couple was involved in a scam of Rs 100 crore by misusing funds meant for toilet construction. After this, Medha Kirit Somaiya had lodged a complaint against Sanjay Raut and filed a defamation case of Rs 100 crore.
15 days jail sentence
Sanjay Raut has been convicted in this defamation case. Metropolitan Magistrate 25th Court, Mazgaon has given the verdict today on Thursday after hearing a complaint filed by Dr. Medha Kirit Somaiya. The court has sentenced Sanjay Raut to 15 days imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25000. Sanjay Raut has been sentenced under IPC section 500.
What was Medha Somaiya's argument?
In her complaint filed in the Sewri Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Medha had said that the allegations leveled by Sanjay Raut are baseless and of derogatory nature. The wife of former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya said that she was shocked to see the news that Raut has accused her and her husband of being involved in a scam of Rs 100 crore regarding the construction and maintenance of some public toilets in the area under the jurisdiction of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation. In her complaint, Medha had said that the statements of the accused given in front of the media are defamatory. Statements were made to tarnish my image in front of the general public.
