News Topical, Digital Desk : The Election Commission released the draft voter list for Tamil Nadu's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) today, Friday, December 19, 2025. Before this process, Tamil Nadu had 6.41 lakh voters, but after the completion of the process, the list revealed that Tamil Nadu now has 5.43 lakh voters.
The Election Commission has released the draft voter list for Tamil Nadu as well as Gujarat. More than 9.7 million names have been removed from the new SIR voter list in Tamil Nadu. Now, 5.43 lakh voters will cast their votes in the next Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Meanwhile, 7.3 million names have been removed from Gujarat's draft voter list.
Why were names removed from the voter list ?
The Election Commission has removed the names of deceased individuals from the SIR draft voter list, but their names were included in the previous voter list. The names of those who have left the states and settled elsewhere have also been removed from the voter lists in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. Furthermore, the names of those who were registered in the voter lists of the two states are also missing from this list.
97 lakh names deleted from Tamil Nadu voter list
According to a report released by the Election Commission, 2.7 million people removed from Tamil Nadu's SIR draft voter list have been listed as deceased. Another 6.6 million people removed from this list are those who have migrated from the state.
While preparing the voter list, the Election Commission found that there are 3.4 lakh people whose names are registered at two places, hence the names of these people were also removed.
73 lakh names deleted from Gujarat voter list
The names of 73.7 lakh people have been removed from Gujarat's SIR draft voter list. Of these, 51.86 lakh are those who no longer live in Gujarat. Another 18.07 lakh people have been listed as deceased. Additionally, 3.81 lakh people are registered in multiple locations.
