News Topical, Digital Desk : Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has said that the world will need a global workforce in the future amid changing circumstances and new trade agreements will emerge. He added that despite uncertainties, trade will find its way.
He was speaking at a panel organised by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Saturday. Jaishankar said, “The world will need a global workforce and trade will continue despite uncertainties. We will see new trade agreements, technology, connectivity and workplace models that will significantly change the global landscape in the times to come.”
India's goal
Jaishankar said India is already engaging with Latin America and the Caribbean and now aims to further expand trade and partnerships in these regions. He added that in the current turbulent global environment, it is crucial, especially for larger countries, to develop the capacity to become self-reliant.
Jaishankar's statement comes after the US recently proposed raising the new H-1B visa fee to $100,000 and imposing an additional 25% tariff on India. This brings India's total import duty on Russian crude oil purchases to 50%, one of the highest in the world.
How many Indians have H-1B visas?
According to the data, Indians constitute 71% of H-1B visa holders, or approximately 2.8 lakh. They are followed by Chinese citizens, who account for approximately 11.7%.
