News Topical, Digital Desk : Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in South Africa on Friday afternoon amid continued uncertainty over the joint declaration following the G-20 summit to be held in Johannesburg over the next two days. The United States is opposing this first-ever meeting of the world's 20 leading economic powers on the African continent.
US President Donald Trump has opposed the summit, accusing the South African government of neglecting the interests of white farmers and resorting to state repression. Doubts are being raised about the possibility of a joint declaration.
India is reportedly trying to broker a rapprochement between the two sides in a similar way to how the heads of state of Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa helped overcome obstacles to a joint statement during the 2023 New Delhi summit.
Before leaving for South Africa, PM Modi praised the G20 theme of 'Solidarity, Equity and Sustainable Development' and said that South Africa had helped in taking forward the outcomes of the 2023 Delhi and 2024 Rio de Janeiro summits.
"I am visiting the Republic of South Africa on November 21-23 to participate in the G20 Leaders' Summit. The African Union was made a permanent member of the G20 during India's presidency in 2023. I will present India's perspective at the summit, in line with our vision of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and 'One Earth, One Family, One Future,'" he said.
Modi's first meeting is scheduled for late Saturday night with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Aside from this summit, all eyes will be on PM Modi's trilateral meeting with Brazilian President Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The three leaders will meet under the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) forum. Currently, these three countries have strained relations with the United States.
