News Topical, Digital Desk : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met several global leaders on the sidelines of the G-20 summit on Sunday. During his meeting with Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, the two leaders agreed to further strengthen ties in areas such as trade, investment, technology and energy, besides exploring deeper cooperation in the defence and space sectors.
This was the second meeting between Modi and Carney. The previous meeting was in June on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
Target to increase bilateral trade to $50 billion
PM Modi wrote on Twitter that he had a very useful conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. "We have set a target of increasing our bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. Canadian pension funds are also showing keen interest in Indian companies," he said.
Bilateral trade between India and Canada crossed the $30 billion mark in 2024. India emerged as Canada's seventh largest trading partner that year.
PM Modi and Georgia Meloni meet
According to IANS, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, during her meeting with PM Modi, expressed solidarity with India over the Red Fort terror attack and reiterated her commitment to work together to combat terrorism.
The two leaders adopted the India-Italy Joint Initiative to Combat Terrorist Financing. The initiative aims to deepen bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism and enhance cooperation in global forums, including the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). This was the second meeting between Modi and Meloni in two days.
PM Modi also met the Japanese Prime Minister
PM Modi met with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and discussed bilateral cooperation in areas such as innovation and defense. The PM wrote on Twitter, "Had a fruitful meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. We discussed ways to accelerate bilateral cooperation in areas such as innovation, defense, and talent exchange. We are also keen to expand trade relations between our two countries."
PM Modi's meeting with the President of South Africa
PM Modi also held a bilateral meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The Prime Minister shared details of his meetings through several posts on the internet media. After talks with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Modi said that India and Jamaica are bound by a friendship rich in historical and cultural ties. Our partnership is continuously growing with a deep commitment to collective progress. During his talks with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Prime Minister Modi discussed cooperation in areas such as water resources, innovation, technology and energy.
The Prime Minister said that we will continue to work to deepen trade and investment ties in the future. Modi also spoke with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
Modi leaves for home after attending the summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for New Delhi on Sunday after attending the G-20 summit and holding bilateral meetings with various global leaders. In a post on Twitter, Modi said that a successful G-20 summit in Johannesburg will contribute to building a prosperous and sustainable planet. "My meetings and discussions with global leaders were very fruitful. These will further strengthen India's bilateral relations with various countries. I would like to thank the wonderful people of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African government for organising this summit.
