News Topical, Digital Desk : Do you also feel a strange uneasiness while traveling or going to the toilet when you're away from home? Are you one of those people who wait for hours just to freshen up comfortably once you get home? If so, it's not just a habit. Dr. Sharad Malhotra (Senior Consultant and Director, Gastroenterology, Aakash Healthcare) explains that this is a specific condition called Shy Bowel Syndrome.

It's a mental problem, not a physical one

Dr. Malhotra explains that this problem is more related to a person's mental state than to a physical illness. It's typically seen in people who are introverted or easily uncomfortable. This condition results from mental pressure , stress, and ingrained body habits.

Therapy is more effective than medicines

Since the root of this problem lies in the mind and habits, Dr. Malhotra believes that medications are less effective. Instead, counseling and behavioral therapy prove more beneficial. With the right therapy, fears and hesitations can be overcome.

Easy ways to get relief

According to the doctor, some small lifestyle changes can improve the condition:

  • Diet: Include fiber-rich foods in your diet and drink enough water throughout the day.
  • Exercise: Make it a habit to do light exercise regularly.
  • Change the habit: The most important thing is to gradually try to develop the habit of freshening up outside the house as well.
